![]() ![]() It stands tall as the best R&B album in a long while, if not the best album in a long while. His major-label debut swings from Stevie-style keyboard breeziness to 90s R&B to mystic. ![]() Overall, it’s a remarkable achievement for a 24-year-old. Frank Ocean has quickly proven himself to be among the most gifted singer-songwriters of his generation. Track 11 'Lost' is personally my 3rd favourite song on the entire album it is funky and at the same time carries in its lyrics the story of 'her' being lost in 'Miami, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Spain/ Los Angelos, India, lost on a train' I believe out of Frank Ocean's Charted songs (Sweet Life, Thinking 'Bout You, Pyramids & Super Rich Kids, respectively all released as singles) 'Lost' proved his most. Comprised of huge R&B tracks (“Sweet Life”), weird, epic experiments (“Pyramids”), piano-ballad driven rap songs (“Super Rich Kids,” featuring a double-take-inducing verse from Earl Sweatshirt), depressing baroque gospel pop (“Bad Religion”), an Andre 3000 song (“Pink Matter”), and odd, radio-jingle-like songs (“Fertilizer” and “Forrest Gump”). The story he tells is a strange one, the Cali-kid seeking solace in the company of a stranger - his taxi driver. Channel Orange is a massive artistic statement, one that few expected after news came of Ultra‘s demise. The first track from Channel Orange's faintly bizarre final act, the soul-searching 'Bad Religion' begins with sad, Procol Haram organ, which then gives way to flourishes of Beatles-ian strings before a crotch-holding scream jumps out, kickstarting Ocean's vaguely distraught vocal performance. A week before it was released digitally, Ocean came out as bisexual, giving the whole project an even bigger feeling of profundity.īut no expectation could have prepared listeners for how good this album is. Single after single started trickling out, and it seemed as though Channel Orange might end up being something really special. Also, Frank Ocean has mixed a number of genres like R&B, hip-hop. ![]() Frank Ocean structured this album so it would play like a TV channel-there are many 'commercials' throughout the album, or musical interludes between songs with varied sound effects and feelings. After word surfaced that his debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, wouldn’t see a deluxe rerelease from label Def Jam, it seemed there was a real risk he’d be left behind, another victim of label politics and the machinations of men in suits who don’t really know what good music is.īut then, Ocean announced an all-new album on, yes, Def Jam. Aside from its obvious orange-ness, Channel Orange is a special, strange album. ![]()
